They are small, often family-run businesses that only open by appointment: you book one or two days in advance, the visit lasts two or three hours including a walk in the vineyard, the cellar and a tasting, and you are back in the city in time for dinner. You drink Valcalepio DOC and limited-production natural wines.

Curated by Giulia, who manages and hosts the Magic Place Bergamo apartments · Updated on 27 August 2026

The first time we sent some of our guests up into the hills for a tasting, they came back two hours late for dinner. Not because anything had gone wrong: simply, nobody felt like leaving. That is the point of tastings near Bergamo. They are not a box to tick off a list, they are the kind of afternoon that ends up quietly rearranging the rest of your day.

Anyone arriving in Bergamo almost always spends their time between the centre and Città Alta, the museums, the Venetian Walls, and the bars for an aperitif. Few know that fifteen to twenty minutes away, the same hills turn into vineyards: small, family-run ones that almost all operate by appointment, without the crowds of Italy's better-known wine routes.

The essential data

Distance from Bergamo city centre

15-20 minutes by car or private transfer

Reservation

by appointment only, 1-2 days notice advised

Duration of the visit

2-3 hours: vineyard walk, winery, tasting

What to drink

Valcalepio DOC red and white, limited-production natural wines

Best time of year

from spring to early autumn

Suitable for

couples, families with children, first-time visitors to Bergamo and returnees

Why the hills of Bergamo

If you ask around, the general consensus is that Bergamo isn’t really a wine destination, and that it’s better to head elsewhere to find something worthwhile. We don’t entirely agree. What Bergamo has to offer is on a smaller scale and moves at a slower pace: restored vineyards, organic and biodynamic producers, and people who are often the very same ones who pour the wine into your glass.

And it pairs well with a stay in the city centre. Spending the morning wandering around Bergamo and letting the afternoon slow down in the hills is a simple rhythm, and not a few guests end up building their entire trip around this.

Who is this experience perfect for

This experience is particularly well-suited to those staying in Bergamo for at least two nights, couples looking for a peaceful afternoon out of the city, families who prefer a flexible pace, and international travellers wishing to discover a more local and less touristy side of Lombardy.

The wineries near Bergamo and Valcalepio

The hills of Bergamo are home to the Valcalepio DOC, the first designated appellation in the province of Bergamo. The decree dates back to 1976 and codified two types: the red, a blend of Merlot and Cabernet, and the white, made from Pinot blanc and Pinot gris. The Consorzio di Tutela was founded in the same years and today brings together over eighty members. It is not a wine that most people outside Lombardy know, and that is precisely why tasting it on site, directly from those who produce it, works better than reading about it beforehand.

Alongside the appellation, however, there is a second layer, and it is this that makes the area so interesting: the small estates that operate outside the mainstream, often on vineyards that have been brought back to life after falling into disuse. Le Driadi Slow Farm, an organic and biodynamic family-run farm between Palazzago and Pontida, is a good example: vineyards taken back in hand in 2014, spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts and no winemaking additives. It is not a large estate with a tasting room designed for tour buses. It is a different kind of story, and it is often the part that guests remember and take home with them.

What a natural wine tasting in the hills is really like

Forget the idea of a script and a tasting room. In the hills of Val Pontida, between Pontida and Palazzago, a tour dedicated to natural wine (wines produced with minimal intervention, using indigenous yeasts and without taking shortcuts in the vineyard) usually involves walking amongst the rows of vines with those who actually cultivate them, before heading down into a small cellar where the explanations focus on the soil and the seasons, not on marketing.

Here, the land has a precise name: the Pontida flysch, rich in silica and very friable, on slopes that in some places reach gradients typical of mountain vineyards, with vineyards up to 400 metres above sea level.

We’ve seen that this experience is perceived differently depending on who’s taking part. Couples tend to slow right down and ask about the story behind every bottle. Families get on better with a short walk to start with: children need to let off steam before anyone can expect them to sit still and listen. In any case, the tour works because it’s led by Luciano and Gabriella, the owners, who have actually grown those grapes themselves – not a guide reciting a script. The vineyard had been abandoned when they took it over in 2014, with the first small harvest the following year, and this part of the story emerges naturally as you walk.

To round off the afternoon with something a bit greener, stay in Val Pontida: the Monte Canto footpaths start just a few minutes’ walk from the winery and wind through chestnut woods towards Borgo del Canto, a rural hamlet abandoned in the 1950s. Every year, local winegrowers open their cellars along a circular walk of around nine kilometres through farmsteads and vineyards, but you can explore the route on your own at any time of year.

How to book, the transfer and getting back in time for dinner

Here’s the practical bit – the part that causes the most difficulty of all: visits are by appointment only. Most small producers ask for at least one or two days’ notice, and turning up unannounced usually means a rushed tasting rather than the full experience.

This is what we usually help our guests to organise:

Please select a date and time based on the length of your stay. Early afternoon works well if you want to be back in the centre for dinner, while late afternoon is better if you prefer to avoid the heat and enjoy the tasting in the sunset light.

Book the appointment in advance, ideally a couple of days in advance, especially at weekends between spring and early autumn.

Confirm the formatvineyard walk, winery tour, tasting, and optional food included. Please report any intolerances so that the winery can organise the right pairings.

Organise the transport. If you stay with us, we can book a private transfer directly from your apartment, so you don't have to worry about parking or driving on the hill roads after a few glasses.

Return to the city for the evening. Città Alta at sunset is a good reward after an afternoon among the vineyards.

What's on the table

A good tasting here almost always comes accompanied by food, not as a side dish but as what makes the wine understandable. Expect between two and five wines alongside local cheeses, cured meats and other products from small producers in the same hills. It is not a formal matching menu: it is more of a long, leisurely snack, which nevertheless goes wonderfully with what you are drinking. Please let us know of any dietary requirements when booking, so that Gabriella can choose the most suitable Bergamo specialities for you.

When to go

From spring to early autumn is the ideal period. The hills are green, the walk through the vineyard is pleasant rather than muddy or too hot, and a late afternoon visit can naturally flow into the golden hour. If your stay includes one of our apartments with terrace or hill view, it is worth arranging the tasting so that you get back right as the light changes: Bergamo, seen from a rooftop at that time of day, is at its best.

Private visit or organised tour

Both work, and it really depends on what you're looking for that afternoon.

Private tour with the producer

Organised tour

Group size

only you and your host

often a fixed group

In-depth analysis

growing and winemaking explained by those who do it

more general, accompanied by a guide

Rhythm

flexible, useful with children or jet lag

fixed schedule

How to get there

private transfer from the apartment

collection varies depending on the operator

If you’re looking for a relaxed chat and an authentic feel for the place, a small-group tour is almost always the better option. An organised tour makes sense if you’re in a large group or if you prefer a more predictable experience, with a set timetable and pre-arranged stops.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance do I need to book a wine tasting near Bergamo?

At least one or two days, because most of these wineries can only be visited by appointment. If you arrive on a spring or early autumn weekend, book in advance: those slots sell out first.

What is usually included in the tour?

Most visits combine a walk in the vineyard, the winery and a tasting of two to five wines paired with local cheeses and cured meats. Ask at the time of booking if you want the full version and not just the tasting.

Can children be brought?

Yes, and it’s actually one of the simplest formats for families: the schedule is flexible, and the walk through the vineyard gives the children a chance to stretch their legs before the actual wine tasting.

What wine do they drink in the Bergamo hills?

Valcalepio DOC, both red and white, which is the historical designation of the province, and the limited-production natural wines from the small wineries of Val Pontida, often Merlot but also Moscato, Bronner and other varieties.

Is Bergamo also a good base for Franciacorta?

Yes. Many guests spend one day exploring the hills around Bergamo and another on an excursion to Franciacorta, the Lombardy region famous for its sparkling wines. These experiences are different enough not to feel repetitive: here, the setting is small and informal, whilst there the wineries are larger and the tours more organised.

What is the most common mistake?

Thinking you can just turn up unannounced. These are small establishments that operate by appointment: a booked slot – even one arranged the night before through your host – really does make all the difference to the success of your visit.

If you stay at Magic Place Bergamo and want to experience a wine tasting in the hills near the city, write to us before or during your stay. We will check availability with local producers, help you choose the best time and organise a private transfer from the apartment when needed.

Check apartment availability

In breve.
